How good are these bikes, i know their 3 cylinder but how do they match up to the 600cc bikes such as CBR 600 and kaw 636??

I looked at these in the showroom. The styling is pretty nice, but the finish is poor compared to other European marques (Aprilia, MV Agusta, BMW, Ducati, etc.) and Japanese brands. The cylinder heads looked bead-blasted. The plastic still had mold marks. The wiring (always an issue with Brit machines) was not as tidy as I would like. And the whole thing looked, I dunno, rough.
It may be a fine machine. I didn't test ride it. But it is not as well or carefully put together as other brands.
Except Hardley Driveitson or Buell - those POS make Triumph look like jeweled Swiss watches.
But get what you like, then you'll like what you get.

I don't know much about Triumph, but I do know that the America is a good looking motorcycle.
Great classic looking bike and you won't have to wear all that junk from the Harley boutique.
It you toke the time and seat on it and it feel good for your first bike or 2nd one that good and Triumph has a resale on it.
But feel you need to be in the ground with H/d-ride because you are going to said where are all the woman that H/D ride said they have.

It all depends on your personal taste in riding and what the purpose of the bike is. Triumph has a cruisers and sport bikes, and yes, they do make a nice product.

Triumph has had it's issues with electronics in the past, but their quality is improving. Their new Daytona 675 has received a lot of great reviews. I do think that they have come a long way in the past 12 years.

If you get the Harley you'll need to spend an extra $1500 on HD licensed clothing and accessories. Get a Triumph - everyone has a Harley.
Triumphs have tested better, will probably hold a little better resale value than a Sporty... there's SOOO many Sporties out there %26 nobody loves them for too long; always have to move on to something bigger or trendier. You can get a Sporster for under $85000 though, easy... especially if you're willing to buy barely used.
I like the Triumph Bonneville ''Scrambler'' and the Bonneville Black. The Thruxton looks nice but for me the handlebars are too low.
If you get the Harley you will spend a fortune adding custom parts to it, S+S air filter, louder pipes etc.
Get the Triumph. The Bonneville has more character than any HD out there. I've ridden the current Bonneville and I have to say I was really impressed with its power and handling. I expected that it was all looks but I was completely wrong. Did you notice that the one HD supporter basically said he likes the HD because he's accepted? An individual, just like everyone else...
This legendary guitarist is currently on his 'Rick Emmett Plays Eric Clapton' tour. I just bought tickets a few minutes ago for his February show. It's a great little venue...a community centre which holds around 250. I saw Johnny Winter there last year...front row!

Hi there. I'm after peoples' advice on getting my first 'big' bike. I'm 24 years old, 5'11, male, 14 stone. I've had two bikes before; a 50cc when 16 and a 125 that I've used on and off since then. Mostly been driving a car in the past 5 years. To be honest I haven't done much riding over the past couple of years as I have been traveling with work. I'm torn between the Honda Hornet 600 and the Street Triple. Leaning more towards the Street Triple though. What do experienced bikers think? Also am I making too much of a leap power-wise? I'm generally a level headed guy, not prone to random acts of stupidity! I'd like to think I could treat it with respect. Am I being naive? Any help would be much appreciated? Cheers

I had a 2001 Sprint ST. Its was good bike. I think you can handle it. It was very easy to get speeding tickets though. Anytime you get on a bike form a car, its a whole new ball game. be careful.

I've biked and driven in Europe quite a bit now - I've not had problems with credit cards. One problem you might have is extended lunch breaks, particularly in more out-of-the-way bits of France. Get fuel in the morning if you might need it. Not a problem on toll roads.
The stopping Aires (can't be certain of the spelling now) have mixed facilities. Some just provide toilets, some full services.
People tend to pull out of the way for bikes more - which is nice.
toll roads are much quicker - but less interesting. If you've got the time use some of the main non-toll routes, just to make a change. I've found people in out of the way places to be quite friendly.
If you pack well you can bring back a dozen bottles of wine in your luggage.
Keep all your documents with you when driving. They can be keen on insurance and ownership.

the 73 was not a good yr, regarding the electrical......but triumph and norton were famous for poor chargeing systems.. don't let this hold you back buying one if it's in decent shape....... they got lots of torque, so 2 up is no problem... brakeing is only fair , vibration is not bad .... I had several english bikes over the yrs. .....bsa and royal enfield were my favorites .......parts for all these are easy to get and prices are reasonable..., a bonnie would be a good choice for a female of a lighter build..... big enough but not bulky , plenty of power but not radical , easy to work on , not hard to start thanks to the amal concentric bowels ( carbs.....hope this helps a little.......Daryl

I had one of these when it was 2 years old, absolutely hated it, the engine was pretty good but overheated, electrics were pretty crap and the chrome on the wheels not much better than italian chrome. Spent a lot of time getting the thing sorted but the engine was very good and had a lot of potential for tuning.

Rick Emmett is an awesome guitarist and a good singer--the bassist and drummer were good, but nothing special (That's where Rush always had the advantage) A lot of their songs have not aged well, but there are still some classics--especially from Never Surrender and Thunder 7

i like both quite alot myself.... have a sportster 1200. sounds like a tough decision.... this one is probably gonna be a pure preference thing on your own part, any other answers from here will only come from bias.
my 2 cents say that if you like to monkey around with your ride yourself alot, the sportster might be the choice that gives you more options because of all the aftermarket choices available to it over the triumph.... other than that, it'd be a pretty close call.... both have well respected names and histories, both price comparably, both will have good resale, neither are japanese.
harley will likely be faster to get parts/service around the country just because of a better dealer infrastructure, but if there is a triumph dealer in your city and you don't tour anywhere it's irrelevant..

I'm not sure you can get a purely unbiased answer to this question because motorcycle brand allegiance can be intense and too impassioned. This comes from a Sportster rider who loves his bike, but also likes Triumphs. I don't have much riding experience with Trumps however, so I suggest you follow this link for a pretty good perspective of the bikes side by side (Sportster vs. Bonneville in this case).

use a voltage meter?
is there a battery, or magneto only? if there is a battery, you can trace which wire goes to the frame. if it comes off the negative terminal? you are golden. if it comes off the positive terminal, you know it has not.
i know its a larger bike than most suggest but i really hate the idea of buying a bike just to have to sell it in a couple months.
i would even rather put a granny on it, if i feel the need.

Just remember that it is up to you to have the mental dicipline to keep this bike under control. You'll do fine if you remember this thing can really take off on you.

My first street bike was a Kawasaki KZ 1000 back in 1977. Lots of people learn to ride on Harley Davidsons. A 675 should be fine for learning. Do yourself a favor and take a rider safety class.

Which would you go for? The origional iconic bike that defined an era of cafe racers in the late '60s and early '70s. The sort of bikes owned by the ''rockers'' in Quadrophenia. Lots of character that came with oil leaks and breakdowns, but also prestige and pride of ownership. Or the ''modern classic'' retro? Comes with all the reliability and ruggedness of a modern motorcycle, but somehow (despite the fact it looks very similar) lacks the character and rider/machine bond the origional created?

I certainly wouldn't want a Meriden T140, so of the two I'd have to plump for the 2001 Hinckley T100......even though I haven't seen or ridden one. It has to be better than the T140, just HAS to be. ( I think the pre unit construction Bonnies were the best, late 50's/early 60's)......... :-)
I own both vintage and modern motorcycles. There's something unique about pulling up to a group of riders on a vintage bike. Even die hard H-D enthusiasts come over and shoot the bull with you. Riding a vintage bike makes you appreciate modern machinery so much more on long rides.

I have to change one of the headlamps on my 1972 Spitfire, but can't see how to remove the cowling which surrounds it.
The car has had some bodywork done before i bought it, so there is the possibility that someone put filler over a screw head or rivet.
Can anyone advise me how to do it?
Have checked rimmer brothers site..it lists the part and has a pic, but no evidence of how to remove it (it is part 911 102)

You are removing part # 911101 or 02 based on the Rimmer ref. You will need to remove three bolts to remove the headlamp surround. You will need to raise the hood to access them. One bolt is at the bottom front edge of the hood and about two inches in from the front of the surround. The other bolt is located next to the lower outside nut that holds the headlamp housing in the hood. Third bolt is on the inside the front of hood close to where the wiring harness is tucked-away.

John K is good, but also add that some of the models didn't have a screw, they were just pushed on.
The screw for the chrome surround is at the very bottom of the lamp.Not uncommon for it not to be there as it rattles out.Start at the bottom if its not there? and use a flat bladed screwdriver between the trim and the headlamp bowl and it should spring off,hope this helps,

Hubby has a '73 trident - with 3 amal carbs. He took off the right side spark plug while it was running, with no noticeable change. Of the three ignition points, which one leads to that spark plug? Help appreciated - we don't have a manual of ANY kind.

*Center or ''Top'' set fires #3/RIGHT Cylinder
*Right set,,towards front of bike fires #2/Middle Cylinder

ANY of the points can be made to be #1 set,,,and the breaker plate can be position almost anywhere.
But Regardless of that ,,,the SEQUENCE is always the same counting from whatever Points happen to be #1.

I may soon be on the hunt for one of the two bikes above. Much as I love the new Bonnie, I see that the Kwak is a lot cheaper second hand, looks more original (even has a kickstart as well as the electric start) and I've read some good reviews.
On the downside, the Kwak is down on power, but still up to the relaxed cruising and touring I need it for.
I still hanker after the Bonnie, but I reckon this might be more to do with the badge on the tank, rather than the bike itself!
So which should I go for, assuming I'm after a second hand, good condition low-miler?

Get the cheaper one...I bet it needs less maintenance.
I've wanted to get a W650 for some time also, but they are hard to come by since they were only made two years. They can also be expensive since most people love them and don't want to sell them. I chose to buy a yamaha XS650. They stopped making them in 83 but parts can be had cheap and since they made them for 13 years there are millions to be had. They have the kicker option and are dead reliable. They are also almost religiously loved by most owners.
Go with the triumph, my buddys dad has a fairly new bonneville 800 its an 03 i think . its a very nice bike i took a quick ride with him one day and that bike does have some balls and sounds wicked with an aftermarket set of pipes. He has no problems with it and got it fairly cheap
I was browsing these postings and came across your question. I can tell you from personal experience that the W650 is a good solid bike. I owned one of the first ever imported into the US. They do not leak. if this is important to you.. When properly tuned they will start on the 2nd or 3rd kick.

Standard pipes are made with a responsibility towards the environment and the sensibility of other road users. If you need more sound, I suggest you shelve the standard unit (you never know when you may need it) and go for an aftermarket unit which gives a rich sound. Just remember, you will gain in one department, but may stand to loose in the other two; i.e. power and mileage. When you alter the optimum balance, you should be ready to pay the price.

whst the best way to check my charging system on my bike?
put a load-testor on it.........
Buy a multimeter from Home Depot ($20). Fully charge your battery. Test the voltage on your battery. If it isn't between 11 and 14 volts, you need a new battery. If it is between that, your battery is okay and you need to look at your alternator. Run the bike and check the voltage going into the battery from your alternator. You should have about the same voltage as before. If you don't, you need to replace something on your alternator. If your regulator is bad, your bike probably didn't start or got fried when you first tried to start it. Those are the 3 parts of your charging system.
The quickest way I've found is to connect a DC voltmeter to the two battery terminals. Start the bike, and read the meter as you rev the engine. It should climb as engine RPM does, to a maximum of about 14 volts.
I am looking at these two bikes and am trying to decide which one I want more. I like both, but one concern is seat height. Both supposedly have very comparable heights (32 inches), but a friend told me that the Kawi can't be lowered except in the back and that lowering the Daytona is not a go.
This is contrary to what I was told by the dealers. My ideal riding height is a tiny bit lower than 32 so I am curious, is my friend right?
If you only need a couple of inches have the seat cut down. Resetting the suspension (Which should only be done by a trained mechanic) can cause other handling problems. When my girlfriend needed that couple of inches, we had an upholster take the cover off the seat, cut the foam and reuse the cover. Cost about 75 bucks and didn't change the bike or its handling. Goodluck
Suspension is adjustable .. so with the bike set low the seat may be lower than the 32 inches..
but you can always fit lowering blocks %26 slide the forks through the triple clamps to lower a bike..
If the forks cant be slid through the clamps then you may be able to get the springs shortened a little bit to lower the front..

Just ordered a Street Triple which should be here next month. However, the qoutes I am getting for insurances are frankly ridiculous (those companies who have it listed!). Anybody got the same problem or can offer any ideas? (40 year old - male - cleanish licence- albeit only big bike licence for 18 month).
First off the bike is not a sport bike it is a standard. That might help. How long have you been riding, not just with a license of on road, have you taken a safety course? What about the company you insure your car with?
I want one of those bikes as well, but I have a Speed Four and my next bike will either be a tourer or a cruiser.
I'd try a few comparison sites to see how cheap you can get it, I'd agree making your bike as safe and secure as possible will help bring the price down. How about someone like moneysupermarket just recommended them to someone and had a nose as not been quoted for bike insurance on there, quite a lot of insureres on there might be some you havent tried yet :)
try giving motorcycle direct a ring they were by far the cheapest for me (37 year old male clean licence £295 fully comp for a suzuki gsxr1000k6). also consider a limited mileage policy that helps.

I have tried every program in my Norton Systemworks. I found no spyware or virus'. I ran Superantispyware and found nothing. I ran Ad-Aware SE personal and again found nothing.I drfraged. I even tried Norton Go-Back.
Symptoms: when I turn on my computer it is extremely slow in loading Windows XP. It is extremely slow in downloading my desktop, and slow in moving around the internet and my programs.
My mouse is jumpy instead of smooth when moving around. My screen saver, Windows moving triangles is moves jerky and not smooth. After awhile my screen saver will feeze up and disappear. My screen goes blake and i can't get anything to come up and have to reboot my computer my manually turn it off and then back on.
Oh yea, when I intially get on the computer my Norton shows it is refeshing and this takes quite awhile to complete.
This is all a very recent problem. I am at my wits end. Would appreciate any help I can get.

First thing to do is bring up the task manager and see which process is killing your performance. Right click your tool bar and select 'Task Manager' and then click on the processes tab. Look for any processes that are using a lot of CPU. You can then update this question with the process and maybe someone can shed some more light on the issue.

Maybe malware/spyware/virus? I have ran my norton antivirus numerous times, but nothing...Does anyone know of a good helpful free website (not microsoft) where I can find out what these files and drivers are for so I can delete the unnessary ones? Also if i have norton systemworks premier installed on my computer should I continue to have Windows Firewall on?
My solution in the past, when I've had questions like this, is to Google each program individually. Sometimes I see an identification for software, sometimes not. But it's easier than trashing my system by deleting something i need.

Yesterday my / our Norton software went NUTZ. It is telling me, my sister and her ex-roomie, that the Ghost has expired. That the trial period is over. Now it tells me that my systemworks is expired. NO it isn't. I just put it on 80 or 85 days ago. I have 280+ days left. All 3 of us put the Norton on at different dates. My sister just put it on less than a week ago. So, she has like 359 days left and now it sez ''expired''

Search google for a program called Norton Removal Tools, it's made by Symantec and will remove all instance of Norton. Removing this with the Add/Remove programs panel will not do this and will only leave corrupt fragments of Norton which can do pretty nasty things to a system.
After removing Norton you can try a fresh install and enter your lisence key information. If that doesn't work contact Symantec and see what their tech support has to say.
Your other option is to stop paying for Norton Anti-Virus and use AVG Anti-Virus which is a free for personal use program that is significantly better than any of the anti virus suites available for purchase.

Is this on the same computer? If so, you should only have one install of Norton for all of the users. That may be causing a conflict.
Have you changed your computers clock? If you change your computers clock the software will think it's expired.
Either way, it sounds like you need to reactivate the software. Norton will promt you to do so when you run live update and the software is expired. Norton knows when you originally activated the software so it should automatically turn it back on.
Symantec software comes on new PCs with a 90 trial period.
It doesn't matter when you put it on, it is a question of when you registered the product(s)with Norton that is important.
Norton will determine when something expires from the registration date.
You need to contact Norton to sort this problem out.

First, my condolences about your reinstall. There are some people around here to whom reinstalling seems to be something they do often and without a second thought. I had to last September, and I also went through the reinstallation of all my other software. It took months before everything was back in order.
The general good advice about deleting things that don't seem to be doing anything worthwhile is a loud DON'T TOUCH THEM!
There is no absolute list of what's necessary because computers are so complicated. What might be useless on your machine could be critical on your wife's. We could draw up a list of things that are essential to every Windows XP machine, but it would soon bleed over into the ''well, maybe'' area.

I'm looking to install something to at least monitor, and likely block a bit, some of the computer activity from my children (ages 12 %26 8). We have 3 computers on a home network w/both Win98 (for older games) and XP. I'm seeing reviews for eBlaster, XPCSpy Pro, Cyber Patrol, CyberSitter, Guardian Monitor etc. but the more I see the more confused I get. Any insight or current experience with tools that might be helpful? The main concerns would be things like some particular ''YouTube'' videos, more obscure kid-centric websites (that may link to 'others' or download spyware or adware+) and what IM 'chats' are happening (email? - password protected websites like or ''MySpaces''?).

Best is kid education. But they or their friends will always be curious about the forbidden. You can put a few blocks in a netgear or similar wireless router. You can also set the router to send you a report of all websites visited by EVERYONE on your network in it's config. But youtube is so hard with kids - the comments are full of swearing even if the video is innocent. I don't know about the software you mentioned but there is also key capture devices for you to monitor all typing. Pretty big brother-ish but depends on how worried you are about kids. Keeping the computer in the family room was recommended to me by a police detective. Good luck.

What anti-malware company is mentioned in the popup? Is it Symantec? If not then there is a good chance that your computer is infected with spyware and/or adware. Whatever you do, do not purchase anything. Does your computer have any security software already installed? Use them to run a scan of your computer and quarantine any suspicious files.
If you do not have any security software then it is time to get some. At the very least, you should have a antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall applications. You might be able to restore to a previous running image. While booting, press F8 until you get a black %26 white Windows selection menu. Look for the Restore to last running image (or something like it). If you're lucky, you're done.
Otherwise, the BIOS might not be set up to allow booting from CD. Resart your PC and look for a text that tells you the key to press to enter BIOS set up (it changes from system to system, some use the Esc, Del or one of The Fnn keys). Navigate the menus to find boot order options. Make sure CD booting precedes hard disk booting. Exit and try booting from the CD.

This happened to me once. I changed the bios settings to boot from the CD and i booted from WinXP cd and instaled Windows all over again. It really helped. That problem never happened again
Boot from floppy or CD. If you cant boot from floppy or CD then your problem is not within the registry.
I am considering upgrading my operating system to Windows Vista. I am concerned with potential problems with some key programs and hardware. Specifically Adobe Photoshop CS2, Photoshop Elements 3.0, Pixel Ninja, Nortons SystemWorks 2006, and Call of Duty 2. As far as hardware is concerned my only real worries are with the Cannon i9900 wide carriage printer, and Spyder2 Pro colorimeter. I also have an HP 3320 printer that I use for basic utility printing. It is an inexpensive printer, so if it needs to be replaced it isn't a big deal. As far as internal hardware in the computer itself; I have no real concerns as it is quite new and up to date. If you can help with any of my concerns, it would be greatly appreciated.

Only one I don't know about is the HP printer, you'll have to check the HP website for updated drivers, but otherwise you have nothing to worry about, Cannon always have the best up-to-date drivers for all models (I have an i850 and MP600 (All-in-one) that work flawlessly (Even better actually, there's new printing screens in vista making quality/format selection easier, just take some getting used to). As for the programs, I have them all and I've been using them since Vista beta, no problems. I use Photoshop Studio, Flash and 3DS Max every day, no compatability or performance issues. All you need is a Direct X 9 or 10 compatible graphics card. The antivirus uses a bit more ram in my experience, but works the same.
Alright, so my computer has Norton SystemWorks. I hate it, but this is my family's computer so i don't really have a say in what goes on it. Right now, the stupid ''Norton Ghost'' is taking up anywhere from 75%-99% of the CPU. Is there any way I can turn off Norton Ghost so that this won't happen in the future? We never even use this feature of Norton.
Easy, just set the ghost service to disabled. IMO Norton Ghost is a poorly written resource hog...
These instructions assume you are using Windows XP.
Click Start and then click Control Panel.

Find Norton Ghost in the list of Windows services, and Double-click on it.
In the Startup type list, choose Disabled, (or Manual, if you ever wish to use it again without reversing these steps, the important thing is to change it to something besides Automatic)
As the process will currently be running,

You probably got adware and once you remove it that stuff will go away.

If all three of those aren't working, try getting a popup blocker (yahoo toolbar works, mozilla firefox browser has yahoo toolbar installed automatically). If that still doesn't work, do a deep scan of your hard drive with a. scandisk, b. norton and c. adaware. If this STILL doesn't work, you may need to wipe your hard drive clean and re-install windows along with norton, adaware and whatever else you need. Unless you're very good with computers you'll want to have someone who knows what they're doing wipe your computer for you. It shouldn't cost too much to pay someone to do this.

To be perfectly honest, both work just fine - one finds things the other doesn't, just like a cars made by the different manufactuers, but with the same specs, one runs better.
Norton and McAfee a good virus scanners, but because they're so widely used, a lot of viruses target specifically these two AV softwares! My advice is to use something else... avant! is a great AV program, currently up for the 2006 Awards for best AV software. You can pick it up for FREE at http://www.avant.com
Some other recommendations I have for AV would be Trend Micro at http://www.trendmicro.com (paid subscription), and AVG (but I've heard good and bad about this program).

Neither. They are both bloatware, a whole lot of crappy extra stuff that you never really need and they are a drain of resources. Get NOD32 does the exact same job, updates more often (as needed not only once a week or less, like norton) and is nice to your computer from resources point of view.

Does anyone else feel that rebates are just scams? Most companies do honor them and you see your money in about 2 months. However, I have been dragged through the mud by so many companies that either take half a year to honor their rebate or never honor it at all that I just do not trust rebates anymore at all.

i have found that either tune up 2007 or glary utilities works the best and does a great job. both can be used on xp or vista without feezing up other programs. i do not know much about the effects with nortons due to i use mcaffee.

norton 2008 has up to 3 pc's, so does 360, but no p-word encryption. norton systemworks has p-word encryption but not for 3 pc's. I want both and a better package if possible. I don't care about cost. Give me some advise or reccomendations please....

You should defrag about once a month, though most people will only defrag when they experience slowness. I always defrag right after a Windows install, after I install or remove a lot of software. The problem with scans and defrag are that they are time consuming, and you can't do anything when they are running (especially with a defrag). You can schedule these to run at a time when you wouldn't be using the computer, but then the computer has to be on for the program to run.
Systemworks is okay, don't get me wrong, it's a powerful utility, but it is also a resource hog (I know from experience). For antivirus, I use AVG, produced by grisoft, available free at: http://free.grisoft.com/ , for spyware I use Spybot S%26D (Spybot search and destroy) and lavasoft ad-aware available from downloads.com , for firewall, you can use ZoneAlarm.

I cant give exact answer, but i suggest you use external task manager to see more comprehensive whats runnin.
Download dTaskManager from dimio.altervista.org then run it.
You may see ALL task runnin, some maybe virus, you can decide wheter it virus or not by lookin it address, if you sure it is unnormal, you can kill the task easily ( which default task manager cant).
If you not sure what these programs running on the back, you type the names on the Google or yahoo search engine.. For example:

I do not know how many of you have heard of the nintendo wi-fi connection. I have a nintendo DS, and have been trying to connect it. I bought a nintendo wi-fi USB connector. Everything goes great except at the very end. I went to the wi-fi website for help, and it said I might have a firewall blocking it.

I bought Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier a couple of months ago and I have no use for it anymore, so I was wondering if I could sell it on eBay. I’ve used the code to activate it on my computer twice. Once I did it when I first installed it, second was when I had to do a system recovery and installed it again. So can I legally sell the software; its a genuine cd.

Hello all, Norton SystemWorks 2006 crashed while instalilng on my PC and I had to hard boot to get the thing back up. I was able to log back into Windows XP (Home Edition with Service Pack 2) but all my desktop icons had been turned into .lnk files that don't do anything. I can't run anything, not even the DOS prompt, from the desktop. Can't view ''My Computer.'' I can boot up to Windows in Safe Mode and in ''previously working'' mode but get the same .lnk icons there too.
I spoke with Symantec tech support, they said to call Sony (pc mfr). Sony said to take PC to store, get it backed up, then reinstall Windows.
For those of you that know, does it sound like this is my only option?
Also, I have all my important data, photo, and music files stored on the D drive. Can I reinstall Windows without affecting the D-drive? For example--would reinstalling Windows overwrite the current contents of D or would it be relatively safe to NOT backup that particular drive?

sadly you need to do a backup if you still have your data files intact, and then reinstall windows. What sony told you is right. But you can backup your computer yourself if you have enough blank disks on hand. It will cost about 80 bucks if you take it to a computer shop and let them do it.
If you can access System Restore, i would try that first.

When I start up XP, some of the system tray icons for programs in my startup are not appearing. The problem is not with the ability to hide inactive icons, the icons are just not showing up all together. For example, icons that always appear are those for ZoneAlarm (firewall), Lexmark Imaging Studio (printer/scanner software), and Norton Systemworks. Icons for programs that startup upon bootup, that occasionally will appear in the system tray, are such programs like PopTray (an email notifier program I use) and APC Powerchute (a monitoring program for the uninterrupted power supply I use for my computer). The programs are running and are listed in the process list when I bring up the Task Manager, and if I kill the process and start up the program again, the icon will show up in the system tray.
go to START %26gt; RUN .....a run dialog box opens...type MSCONFIG and press enter...click on the STARTUP tab and check all those programs which you want to see in the system tray when the computer starts.....if you cant understand it then click on ENABLE ALL ...and then click on APPLY ...close it.....a box appears which asks you to restart the computer ....click on restart ....when the computer starts a box appears ...something called system configurat.... check the box in that box which says that never show this message again ...press ok....there you go ..your problem's solved....
NOTE : Never keep programs on the startup ...it effects your computers speed....most of the people remove everything from the startup i.e the system tray....

Have you check the start up options. like run %26gt; msconfig %26gt; start up (settings). If yes, then check all the boxes in start up again %26 also set all the icon to be active in task bar properties %26 see what happens.
.VIRUS that sends IMs that I know nothing about to all my unsuspecting friends. Apparently, the IM contains a link to a virus, and when opened, goes to all your buddies. The person I received it from called it the PASSWORD Virus...minus the P (you know YA won't let me say that word...lol). I researched it and came up with removal tools, but it included steps that didn't appear to be on my computer, so I backed out of it. Any suggestions?

WHOOPS...I'm sorry. I should have mentioned that I have Norton Systemworks installed on my computer, and so does the person that I got this virus from. I disabled Norton and ran AVG, to no avail. I also have already downloaded Ad Aware, which found 144 Trojans and a Hijack attempt, and removed all of that. But apparently, this one password thing is still here.

Do you use XP? You can do a system restore that should remove it. Go to Start%26gt; Help and Support%26gt; System Restore%26gt; then follow the instructions.
Also, it helps to clean out your temp internet files and history before you restore.
It disappeared after downloading Norton Protetion Centre and Norton Systemworks. View-toolbars-address bar is on. Hitting F11 makes no difference. Any ideas??

What browser are you using and who is your ISP??? Ir you are using a combination of AOL and Mozilla Firefox you need to change one or the other. That should solve your problem. Let me know if it works

go to an area where there is no print on the top area where the addy use to be!! and right click it you will see CUSTOMIZE..hit that ..depending on which browser your using it will be different ..look around to see where or how to add the address bar back.

I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with the SYSTEM MECHANIC 6 software. I've heard from a few sources that it's the reaal deal as far as fixing serious issues on a PC. Is it as good as I am hearing? Does it cause system problems like NORTON SYSTEMWORKS does?
I have used System Mechanic versions 5 and 6. I found version 5 to be very effective without slowing down my computer. However, I can not say the same about version 6. By default, once installed, it adds several startup programs which slowed down starting Windows. In addition, in the background, it drained a lot of memory and CPU processing power. Personally, I felt it was trying to do too much. Instead, i would recommend you try TuneUp Utilities 2006 which is comparable to System Mechanic. It is incredible easy to use and it doesn't slow down the computer. Its system tuneup, registry cleaner, uninstaller, Windows customizer and file recovery is superior to System Mechanic. I tried it and I think it is somewhat useless and very dangerous. It makes certain changes to your system that you cannot tell it is making and when something goes south you won't be able to undo it.
I have Norton internet security, norton systemworks premier 2006, ad aware, and AVG. I can't get onto some game sites, like neopets.com

it must have been your security programs that's blocking you in getting some of the sites. temporarily, turn off each of the program and access neopets.com, if it will work, you need to uninstall/reinstall these programs, its set too high for you to surf well. good luck

I am using McAfee and I am not happy with the results. Along with McAfee, I am also using Spysweeper as a backup and Spysweeper picks up ifections that McAfee leaves behind. I have used Norton in the Past (Norton SystemWorks 2002-2004), but I really started to get frustrated with them. Has Norton Improved. What about Microsoft's One Touch? Any Other Suggestions would be Helpful. Thank You!
I have been reading these threads and most people seem to suggest that Norton takes up too much memory and slows your computer down. It is also notoriously difficult to remove once installed. I had some problems a few years back and I wanted the best security so I did some research and I can positively recommend these two items to you. I work on the Internet daily and since I installed these I have never had a problem.
Kaspersky anti-virus and CounterSpy anti-spyware. They work well together, won't slow your system down, and will actively protect you at the highest level.

I had something wrong with my north systemworks on my computer and when I looked it up it said to uninstall it then install it back in, I don't know how.
besides AVG, Google pack has quite a few very useful free programs. I liked Picasa which helps you to catalogue and edit your photos. oh, and there is a free Norton Anti Virus 2005 Special Edition up for grabs. it even allows you 6 months online free updates.

I have Norton systemworks 2006, AdawareSE, Spybot, Spywareblaster, Microsoft Antispyware. My son has Limewire installed and I want to remove it.
Follow these removal steps to remove this adware from your computer:
Open the LimeWire folder.
Then open the folder UninstallerData.
Double click the incon named Uninstall LimeWire or something alike.
Follow the on screen prompt to uninstall the program.
If you only want to remove the ad banner from LimeWire, try the following steps:
Close running LimeWire application. To do this, open Task Manager ( press CTRL+ALT+DEL ), from the processes list, select and terminate the process limeshop.exe .
Open the folder C:\Program Files\LimeWire.
Delete the file 'Cbanner2.dll' and 'ads.war'.
Restart LimeWire.
i went to the norton website and used their security scan. it scans your pc to see if you have anti virus, anti spy etc etc.
when my scan was complete, it said i had NOTHING in my pc. no anti virus, nothing!! and recommended norton 360.
what made me laugh was the fact i had norton internet security 2008 and systemworks in my pc and it couldn't even pick up it's own software. pmpl ha ha

I had Norton and Symantec. When first installing symantec, I did a live update and had a hitchicker logger attack from their site! Now I'm using Windows Live OneCare, and am very trouble free.
Good old Norton....makes you wonder if its picking up viruses when you use it on a daily basis.

I have a broadband package that I can have Norton for free if I want it, I choose not to as is one of the biggest system hogs around, not to mention how hard it is to uninstall ALL of it.
I have Norton Systemworks 2006 and everytime I do the one button cleanup I have to relog into yahoo. I'm sure there's a way to tell it not to delete whatever it is that lets yahoo know I'm logged in, but I don't know what it is.

I tried to troubleshoot a Dell computer with the Windows XP media center edition. Windows appears to be starting up, but it reaches the welcome screen and stays there. I tried booting from a Symantec recovery disc from a Norton Systemworks Premier package in hopes of restoring the most recent settings, but the software couldn't see the hard drive. I tried to repair the installation with a Windows XP OS CD, but it didn't seem to see the hard drive, either. I thought I could at least leave an Ubuntu Linux live CD so the owner could access the Internet, and after it loaded, it could see the hard drive. I tried to click on the main partition, and the following error message was displayed:
Cannot mount volume.
Unable to mount the volume.

There was more, but I'm running out of space. Is there any way to get back into Windows as it was?
try installing the ubuntu on it. see if that works. Also make sure it's the new version 7.10, which can read and write to ntfs partitions, prevoious versions could only read, not write. This will allow you to get any unbacked up data off of it, with any luck, then you can try a windows clean install. If all else fails, just get a new drive, they've never been cheaper.
i try to scan with norton systemworks standard edition but it cant do a complete system scan because it gets hung up on a file that i cant even find... i was playing with my computers pc tools and accidently lost all my files then i put norton on and when i run it it scans the lost files and gets frooze on a certain 1 every time... when i go to where norton shows my lost files that folder is empty.. the files arent listed as hidden and i cant do system restore... where are my missing files.. can i get them back and what do i do to get norton to stop freezing on that lost file...

Go for the whole suite. Kaspersky is the best. The best place to get it is on eBay.
Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) = anti-virus + anti-spyware + anti-spam + firewall. Similar to Systemworks.
Kaspersky Anti-virus (KAV) = antivirus only.
Both are excellent but you would not want to use both.

I have a laptop which is running IE7. I have had no problems for the past month and a half connecting or anything. However all of a sudden for the past week when I try to search certain websites, an error message comes up saying that there was a problem with IE and that it was closing. I've run symantec Internet security and SystemWorks and the computer is coming up clean of any viruses etc. and both programs are updated regularly...sooo whats the deal, I don't get it at all.
This was happening to me last week. I don't know what it was, but I cleared my cookies out and rebooted my computer and I haven't had any problems since. So far:-)
I know that started happening to me so I got Mozilla Firefox. It's better.
Because Internet Explorer is very unstable and is full of security holes.

When i burn songs on a cd the song work on mines but when i burn songs and make a cd for someone some people tell me that the song skip or jump or that the cd don t play on theirs but when i try it on mines it work. I burn it on limewire i brought systemworks and see if that would work. But some people work on theirs i don't know is the cd, the software or the music site. what your think. Sometimes i know when the cd not going to work because sometimes it will take a long time to finish.
It might be the speed that you are burning at. Faster speeds create more errors. I never burn faster than 8x. I also use NERO to burn. Another fine program (and it is FREE) is Burrrn 1.14 beta2 ( http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=6 ). I hope that this helps.

Do they skip on the computer or just after the burn them?
That is the most important question.
If they skip even when played onthe computer, that means you downloaded bad mp3s off limewire...
If they skip only when you burn them, you should use a different mp3 buring program.

Basically it is a rollup of all Norton products. It uses a lot of system resources so if you don't have sufficient RAM, your computer will be sluggish and you could experience program crashes.

Norton 360 includes PC Security, Transaction Security, Back Up and restore and PC Tune Up.
You can sign on to Symantec's web site for a comparison, but 360 seems to be the most complete product of all you mentioned in that it includes everything.
On a cautionary note; I don't know about everyones experience with Norton, but this will be my last purchase of their products. This is the third year (not in a row) that I have used Norton products for virus protection (since 2003) and they all suffer from the same problem---that is, the automatic update does not work. The reason I mention the year I started using Norton is that they have known about this problem since I have started using their anti virus products and they still can't fix it! Every year , same thing. After the initial download, everything seems to be working fine until your auto update kicks in and you start getting error messages saying automatic update failed. Then you sign on to Symantic's web site to fix the problem and nothing works.
